WITH PASSION COMES SUCCESS.
As we all know the 05th October marked a very special day for Westrand in terms of fashion.

The 1st annual WestrandFashionShow took place as promised by the organises Carol and Refilwe.

The show started out very slow but with a blink of an eye the show picked up momentum. The designers were running around making sure that all is well with the story they about to tell with their creations. Models- Make-up-Go, that was the countdown for the night.

The beautiful Masego Kunupi, owner of Chique Beauty Westrand also ensured great order on the stage as she was the MC for the night.
Entertainment such as dancing and singing lightened up the atmosphere but at some point I felt like it was taking over the designers' time to showcase their talent.

Westrand designers were the important factor of the night and they sure made us understand that. Moropa, Neo, Katlego, Mpho M, Karabo and Mpho T were the six designers that showcased their skills and passion; Suenel as the surprise designer for the night.
These designers were afraid to show that Westrand has the potential to open doors that aren't meant to be opened when it comes to fashion but their drive and love for their craft showed that they are more than hungry to learn.

Denim and African print played its rounds on the stage but it wasn't daring enough. When I saw silk and sheer fabric just to name a few hit the runway I thought to myself "We on our way to fashion victory".

The designers feared to set trends but we give them five stars for knowing what was trending at that moment so we saw denim on denim, pattern on pattern and some pop-art on the runway a numerous amount of times.

Monochromes and neutral colours were missing but with exposure comes experience so I do believe with the next WestrandFashionShow we will be in for a surprise.

Carol and Refilwe took the first step to what Westrand will soon call "THE IT" event.

                                                              DIAMONDS TOUR

As the countdown began for all South Africans, we knew that the start of all things great was near and indeed it was.

Friday morning started what we all called the ''RIHANNA WEEKEND''. Radio stations played her songs non-stop and believe me, I really wasnt complaining. The only complain I had was not knowing what to wear since the 'THE MOTHER OF STYLE AND TRENDS WAS LANDING SOON'.

Friday passed and Saturday came;still had nothing to wear, my life came to a stand still but more than anything we waited for them to announce that she has landed and there was no sign of that.

SATURDAY midday our 'BADGIRL RIRI' landed and that was a confirmation that the show must go on and it went on indeed.

SUNDAY.....The big day; 'CONCERT TIME'.
67 000 of us patiently waited for her even after she was 30minutes late, we still waited to see what she was wearing. She got on stage wearing a black and gold tracksuit that didnt scream fashion god in my eyes. The baseball jacket from the tracksuit had beautiful gold details on it as well as matching pants but it really was nothing I've never seen before. So the whole outfit went something like this, BLACK AND GOLD TRACKSUIT, PLAIN SLEEVELESS VEST, DETAILED BLACK HALF CAP AND BLACK PUMPS.

Now that didnt scream fashion goddess.... The mother of fashion really didnt grab me with her fashion on stage but she grabbed me when she got off stage carrying the S.A flag on her shoulder.

WEL DONE RIRI, S.A LOVED YOU.....

“There will be seven designers which come from all parts of Westrand. Mohlakeng, Kagiso, Bekkersdale and Finsbury. We only focused on Westrand as a whole”.

·        What criteria did you use to choose the designers that will be showcasing?
The criteria included unknown designers from the Westrand who show potential and passion for their craft.

·        Will there be pop-up stores at the actual event or will the purchasing of items be done after the fashion show privately with the designer?
“There will be a showcase after the fashion show which will give the audience a chance to see the clothes up-and-close but we will also give the away the contacts of the designers in case there is something you want to tell or ask the designer”.

Online shopping store, P&H Boutique, have just launched their in-house range, P&H Curves. Market analysis has shown that there is a demand for plus size clothing in South Africa, an area often neglected by local designers. Plus size clothing available in the market are often just bigger replications of styles designed for size 8 and 10 women. P&H Boutique felt that there was a need for clothing that was specifically designed with the plus size woman's body in mind; clothing that would flatter and compliment their body shape. From this need P&H Curves was born.

P&H Curves aims to provide plus size women with clothing that accentuate their physique, and give them the confidence to go out in public knowing they are wearing something specifically designed and tailored for them.

The first P&H Curves range includes fun pieces using prints, as well as your more classic day and evening looks.

P&H Curves will be available for purchase online at www.phboutique.com <http://www.phboutique.com> within the next week. Orders can be placed already.

Have you ever had that moment when you page through a magazine, newspaper or manual card and you see this this big headline written ‘LOOK FASHION FIERCE?’
I’m guessing we all have.
Headings such as those brought a stir within the fashion department because every fashion critic, fashion editor and fashionista has their own definition as to what fashion really is.

SO WHAT IS FAHION?
Is it your style, your personality or simply your CLOTHES?
Fashion is an overall term used to describe an artistic way of expressing yourself through what you are wearing, but is there a rule to this form of expression?

We often see how everyone mag, blog and newspapers has the deadlly 101s of fashion but its all different, so what does this mean? There is no consistency in the definition itself…
Now if one had to write this article in the 80s the headline would be something like” BOLD IS BEAUTIFUL” because everything was big, catchyand BOLD and in the 2000s it would be something like”LESS IS MORE” becauseeverythingb eas based on the female figure so, slick cuts, monochromatic colours ;the main principal  that pushed this idea was form follows function.

Now today’s headlines would are “THE POWER OF STYLE”
This focuses on one’s ability to take clothes  of every season and turn heads wherever they go. Its vintage, modern, style, personality and most important its comfortability…
So YES the perfect definition has been discovered…”FASHION IS THE ABILITY TO BE COMFORTABLE IN WHATEVER YOU WEAR” because than you are “FASHION FIERCE!”

It’s that time of the year where all those love sick couples go all out to make each other feel like the most special people in the world. That’s right- it’s Valentine’s Day, The month of Love! Although some people have definite plans of what they’ll be doing on Valentine ’s Day, others will be stressing about who their Valentine will be, if any, and what their plans for the day will be. We all love to feel special, and we want you to feel special without having to worry about what to wear when your plans come about. That’s why we have put together outfits to wear out for whatever plans you will be engaging in on the beautiful day of love.
Formal Date
Dinner with your Valentine should guarantee that you always look your best and we urge you to go all out with this one. It is the best opportunity to make your partner drool at the sight of your well-planned outfit. If you believe that you are a Valentine ’s Day fanatic then go with the classical red that’s famously associated with Valentine’s day.
Swap out your Little Black Dress for a classic red figure-hugging beauty that accentuates the waist perfectly and holds the girls in place ever-so wonderfully. Pair that with black platform stilettos, a black clutch and silver jewellery. Your jewellery should enhance the beauty of your outfit- not overpower it.

If the red is a bit too much for you, then you can always fall back on the LBD. One classic dress that will never let you down. Go for an LBD with some lace detail- for that romantic, flirty feel. Pair the dress with accents of red; red stilettos, clutch and the vivacious red lips. And your well on your way to turning heads.
Guys, you don't have to overdress for the V-day dinner date. A double-breasted navy blue blazer with white button detail will work with any semi-formal trouser. If you aren’t afraid of colour then you can pair the blazer with red trousers or chinos, brown loafers and a plain white Tee. Simple, yet elegant.

Casual Date
As much as a lunch date, picnic date or a movie date can seem casual, you shouldn’t have to slack on your outfit. A causal date is the perfect chance to look your best and make it seem as effortless as possible. Most women are so terrified of yellow, more terrified of mixing it with a bright colour, but it can look so beautiful on olive and dark skin tones. Try mixing a rich yellow with red accents for a strong style. Take note of the strong spring trends- the patent flats, clear bags and shrunken cardigans, for that ultimate casual look. Try not to overdo it with too much red during the day. If you want to go for the classic red inspired theme then go for pretty faded reds or even pinks- just keep it simple with basic, fun jewellery. Go for dresses that are 60s inspired- which cinch in the waist and flare wider towards the bottom, keep them above the knee and fun!

For guys, casual dates do not require you to go out in wearing just a jean and T-shirt! Dress up a bit but not too much. As much as this statement may be contradicting itself, it makes the most sense. Go for a fun, semi-formal look. You can pair your chinos with a light washed denim shirt and black loafers with gold detail. If you want to look as casual as the date, then opt for short chino pants with boat shoes and a simple plain white T shirt. Add a nice pair of aviators and you’re set.

Whether you’re dining with your crush at the hottest restaurant around or hitting the town with your mates, Valentine’s day is just another excuse to step up your style game. A few key tips to remember are: If you’re going out with your Valentine, then go for moto jackets, leopard heels and a super hot peplum. If you prefer a night out with your girls then sassy lace shorts and a bright blazer are the perfect pair to paint the town... Red!
Spread the love Bee-U-TeeFully Styled this Valentine’s Day.

Bee-U-TeeFul Stylestyled Fashion Icons

The South African Fashion Scene is filled with many trend-setters, all of which have their own unique styles. These style icons influence SA fashion in many ways, whether it’s their age, social status or their extra ordinary taste, we can surely conclude that their efforts have not gone unnoticed. Sit back and join us, as we take a look at some of the most valued style icons in the South African fashion scene.

·         Bonang Matheba:
This recently turned 25 year old radio DJ, TV presenter, voice-over artist, MC, bag designer and so much more, is one icon making her mark in the fashion scene. Her style is impeccable. The way she is able to turn heads wherever she goes is one of the reasons she made this list. Typically known as “The Queen of Style”, Your Girl B! Never seems to disappoint. Her impressive eye for fashion is also the reason why she has won countless numbers of Style awards. It is impossible to define her and her style so easily. Out of this world beauty and all-out fashionista, Bonang never stops shinning

·         Noni Gasa:
How can we not mention the ever-so stylish, Miss Noni Gasa. Currently a consultant at FashionFwd Productions and a Lecturer at the London International School of Fashion, this lovely beauty is an inspiration to all aspiring fashionistas out there. She has been the Face of Africa, had a clothing line with Legit called “Noni” and won a number of style awards. It is best to place her on top of the fashion ladder. This fashion goddess always does her best to look good for any occasion. A true fashion icon that inspires even the best of the best, as Bonang Matheba even looks up to her. That is what defines her as a Fashion Icon to be taken note of

·         Siyabonga Ngwekazi:
Another multi-talented youngster, Scoop’s fashion style is rather different than usual but very creative nonetheless. This radio DJ, TV presenter, MC and Fashion designer has and still is putting his name out there as a fashion head that needs to be on the look-out for. He got his clothing label, Piece by PAP, off the ground in an epic launch. He is taking men’s clothing to a whole new extreme and that is why we feel his style deserves recognition. He is definitely a trend-setter, who is not afraid to try new styles and put himself out there. He is certainly influencing SA fashion, one colourful bowtie at a time.

·         Gert Johan Cotezee:
From farm-boy to fashionista, Gert is one young multi-talented designer that is set on making his name a household one worldwide. He formed Diamond Face Couture with Uyanda Mbuli, but later branched out on his own to start his fashion label, Gert Johan Coetzee (GJC). He has worked with a number of well-known celebrities, the most common and the face of his fashion label is the bubbly Bonang Matheba. A moment to cherish came when Kourtney Kardashion, of the Kardashions, wore a dress designed by him. He also had arranged to have one of his dresses sneaked in to Kylie Monogue’s dressing room whike performing in SA, as a gift from him. He’s designs are simply elegant, well-thought out and a true reflection of his marvellous talent. Gert and his signature hairstyle are taking the fashion world by storm, hopefully everybody’s ready for him.

·         David Tlale:
Since his catwalk debut in 2003, David Tlale’s fashion label has been a household name country wide. He has been voted the most stylish person at the Annual South African Style Awards, voted Mzansi’s Star Fashion Designer at the Mzansi Star Awards, nominated at the Mercedes Benz Fashion Awards amongst many other awards. He has also launched his Green collection for voluptuous woman, something that is not generally done by designers. He has done some outrageous fashion shows, which are regarded as some of the best on the continent. It is without doubt that his brand has developed into one that is on par with international fashion. He has definitely made his mark, but it is never the end for such a magnificently talented fashion designer. He’s got too many acclamations under his belt to not carry on working as he does.

Curvy girls or Thick girls. However you refer to your body type, curvy girls are the most envied girls for their beautiful curves. The curvy figure is one of femininity, womanhood and of absolute beauty- a physique that should be celebrated. As they all say, “Real women have curves”. So let’s celebrate these blessings the right way as we break-down simple rules for thick girls to follow to be Bee-U-TeeFully Stylish this Summer.

1    Shorts, Shorts and more Shorts!!!

Despite the rather offish weather, it is Spring and time for some skin to be shown. If you’re not comfortable with wearing shorts and have “flabby” thighs, then don't despair. Go for shorts that are longer cut and that sit above or below the kneecap, you’ll still make your legs look longer. Girls who are small on top and have wider hips (Pear-shaped) should opt for shorts in soft, floaty materials. This will flatter wider hips and is an instant chic look; just pair with a pretty blouse and you’re Good-to-go!

2.  Patterns, Stripes and everything in between.
Patterns are so in this season, but caution has to be taken when deciding how to wear them and what kind of patterns work for your body type. Avoid horizontal stripped, round shapes and tacky animal printed pants by all means! Stay far away from them. They will make your body seem wider. Trust me, these WILL expand and exaggerate your hips. Rather wear your prints and patterns on top in the form of a nice fitted blazer and keep the rest neutral and monotone or keep your prints monotonic in dress form

3.  (Maxi)mize your look.

The most effortless look creating waves worldwide is the Maxi skirt. The maxi empire disguises heavy-bottom (wide hips) figures by gently flaring wider towards the bottom. Also try high-low maxi skirts. Synch in a maxi skirt with a belt to create a small waist and pair with denim crop jacket. Simple, effortless and super cute! Love!

4.  Let’s get Chic!

For a more chic look, go for the skater skirt. The skater skirt plays on the idea of an A-line skirt, narrow on top and gently flaring wider toward the bottom. Pair this cute skirt with a plain white tee and a skinny belt with flat ballerina pumps. Make sure to keep it above the kneecap to avoid looking frumpy, while creating the illusion of longer legs

5.  Symmetries.

Stay away from shapes and cuts that will make you look stiff and robotic. Dresses and skirts that are most likely to add extra hips to the ones you already have will not be a good idea. Stick to cuts that are flattering, flowing and light for great comfort or rather go for a nice fitted dress that has sharp edges and cuts to it- to accentuate your features.

6.  Elongate yourself.

Wide feet should be counterbalanced by a wide heel. Thin heels draw attention to your wide feet. My suggestion? Every girl should own a beautiful pair of wedges! These add instant glamour to any casual look and obviously, elongate your body so you look taller without any uncomfy hassles. Great buy for this Spring/Summer! A good pair of shoes is the best investment you can ever make.

7.  If you’ve got it, Flaunt it.

Many thick and curvy girls are afraid to wear short, figure-hugging dresses. Don't be! You have got curves for days so why not show them off? It’s okay to wear tight bandage dresses that are well above the knee or figure-hugging pencil dresses for those rather special occasions. Just Remember to keep it simple, elegant and most of all, classy. Pair your dress with a nice, short, fitted blazer to flatter your waist and killer platform heels. Perfect!

8.  Oh Denim!

When it comes to the right denim for thick girls I would recommend you stick to bootlegs, wide legs and bell-bottoms. Because these represent an A-line cut, they will help balance out your body from your curvaceous hips to your feet. It is more than okay to wear skinny jeans- just make sure it is the right fit for you and high-waisted to synch in your waist. If there’s anything you should remember when wearing denim-on-denim, it should be this: Light on top, Dark on the bottom. Simple.

9.  Colour it right!
You’re curvy, not fat! Stop wearing black to look slimmer. Yes, it helps and does work on certain occasions but please, don't rule colour out of your wardrobe completely. It does take confidence to pull-off bright colours and get the colour-blocking trend correct without imitating a Christmas tree. If you’re a bit sceptical about colour, then I suggest you go for light, pale colours. Mint green is trending this summer, pale pinks, nude colours all add sophistication and femininity to your look. There is no need to be afraid of colour- be bright, beautiful and bold

10.Get Blousey.
Blouses can add ultimate femininity to any dull outfit. Go for light, sheer and flowy blouses, especially if you are gifted with bigger bust. Crisp white blouses are a must-have. They can be transformed from day to night. Pair your blouse with high-waisted dark denims/pencil skirt or cute skater skirts. Keep the feminine touch by adding nude platform heels and a classic red lip and my dear, you’re ready to take on the world.

With these simple and effortless tips to looking good this summer, I doubt you’ll go wrong. So, to all my thick girls, embrace your curves the best way possible- Love them. #TeamThick.

Retail therapy is often regarded as the best therapy there is- some may beg to differ, but we all know it’s true. Shopping is not just a hobby but rather a skill that can be mastered. How? Well, we’ll tell you exactly when to shop to catch those major clearance sales; have you looking fabulous and saving a lot of money. We have compiled a few basic tips to smart shopping this year.
Ø Learn to familiarise yourself with the major retail store’s sale dates- this will help you save so much money.
Ø By binding your timing and mastering your smart shopping, you can get up to 60% off the regular price. Every woman’s dream!
Ø Another option of getting items at a better price is to buy the items 6 weeks from the time they were introduced in store. I'm sure the wait will be worthwhile.
Ø December shopping can be postponed to January when prices are guaranteed to be less. And you’ll be avoiding the ever-so hectic December rush. Smart !
Ø With regards to summer clothing, opt to do your shopping in April/May- that is when summer items are being sold less to make way for new winter arrivals.
Ø When deciding on which stores to target in order to accommodate your pocket, go for stores that are generally in your price range. Their sales will always have you leaving their stores with bags of new and totally affordable outfits.
Ø Usually, it would be said to not just buy anything because it’s cheap- well, scratch that idea! Be creative when picking out items that are on sale, even if it’s not something that you would normally go for. You could just start a new trend and have saved a ton in the process.
Ø Keep the latest trends in mind when shopping at clearance sales. Make sure that what you’re taking will work wonders in the next season. Go for classic looks- they’re always the best buy.
Ø Do not be afraid to ask in store for the regular sales, this will help you stay prepared for when they do take place. A great example will be YDE’s seasonal R99 sales.
You can save so much money just by timing your shopping trips and heading to the mall on certain days. Knowing the best times to shop for clothes will keep money in your wallet and help you remain as fabulous as ever. Be smart this year. Be Bee-U-TeeFul!

There's a new wave of freshness that has come back through time bringing back the old and making it the new. Its like an Aids epidemic that has infected every young individual. From the olden days of Marilyn Manroe,Madonna,Queen elizabeth and the Duchess of Cambridge to name but a few. Vintage has taken over the fashion world by storm. To get an idea of what is Vintage we have to understand what is vintage. The term Vintage is much debated one. It is usually used to describe clothes that were created in the past. However, it is not as simple as that. Fashion from the past is divided into three main groups antique, vintage and retro. There is much debate as to which eras qualify for which category. Many consider the 1920s to be vintage whereas others argue it is antique. For the sake of this article all garments before the 1920s will be considered antique. Vintage will be anything made between the 1920s and 1950s. Finally retro refers to any clothes from the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s. The word vintage is used to describe clothes that are from the 20s, 30s, 40s and 50s. That is not to say that vintage is any old garment. It has to be a garment that reflects that era.

Taking it back to where it is, at its best we observe what are the modern young ones doing in this era. Vintage has come alive in the streets of JHB and dominating fashion shows and all related art events. To the young kids of Soweto down to the designers that live in the upper north side of Joburg, they all seem to be infected by the vintage bug. As we attend all the major fashion shows everybody cant stop talking vintage. We ask ourselves why has this generation chosen this dress of fashion style. As our elders would say there's nothing better than old school couture and it has been proven through the influence of television and any media platform. From the days of e Molofish, the Mr bean car, Beetles and the forever classic Volkswagen Mk1. The influence has always been there but now it is being translated through fashion.

Vintage Fantastic
This week's inspiration as winter clearly makes it's mark on jozi is the vintage look. We look to the past for idyllic and wistful images filled with pastels, browns and greens and blues. Don't be afraid to mix crazy prints. I'm talking blazers and high waisted shorts with stockings for warmth. take a cue from this pic for inspiration;

Remember:
"One thing is essential for style. Authenticity. And it “lives”in the spontaneous expression, the unobstructed thoughts, the creative actions. And when all are completed at every single face remains a smile of joy, and positive energy, like an elixir that makes you evolve your fashion mentality. Nothing is the same afterwards."

Trawl flea markets like the NEIGHBOURHOO GOODS MARKET in Braamfontein or vintage and second hand shops for unique pieces you can turn into wardrobe staples and fashion show stoppers. Its not about how much clothing you have; it's about what outtfits you can create. xxxx HAPPY STYLING

It's BIGGER, brIghTer and BOLDER.... Autumn 2012 Fashion Forecast

Summer is on it's way out in Sunny South Africa and Autumn is starting to make her mark. The trees are changing colour BUT there is no need for you to! The biggest trend this season is STILL colour! Be unique and dare to go against the traditional drab yellow and orange palettes associated with Autumn. Instead pull out bright tops and layer for warmth. Invest in statement pieces like bright blazers and quality tailored pants for quality you can dress up or down in any season. Be colourful; BE real!!!
