One on One with Thabiso (Film Director)

1Q. Thabiso,why filming?
A. Directing is a crafts man's work, the more time you take in doing it,automatically you find pleasure in doing it & automatically the results are fulfilling.
I never thought in my life I would have so much love for the camera & the pictures it brings, but maintaining a director's career is very expensive & very demanding. In all the years of my low budget short films I have made peace with the fact that money is not my friend. From my low budget films "The Last Kiss" to "The Last Time You See Me" I never even imagined myself with a sports car,a super bike or a mansion house but all I wanted was for my films to be seen by the whole world. At this time my goal is to get myself a director's job in Hollywood. Yes I'm hoping & praying someone will see my craft in my films & get me a block buster director's deal.

2Q. Your Top three Mzansi movies?
A. Life Above All,Goodbye Bafana & Forgiveness

3Q. What would you like to change in the filming industry?
A. The fact that we've got other thousand stories to tell the world apart from Apartheid.

4Q. Movie making can be a time consuming job what do you do for fun?
A. Watch movies...(Laughing)

5Q. If you had a chance to direct a Hollywood movie what would it be and why?
A. A book adaptation,a story from a novel, because as a reader you've already built a relationship with the characters & it's a story you feel you are connected to when you see the film.

6Q. A little bird told us that you working on a movie called 'Last Kiss' tell us about it...
A."The Last Kiss" is a short film (17mins)based in the 80's,it takes place in the township following a love story of a young couple Thomas & Maria who has just got engaged. Thomas wants to go to war as part of his manly hood,he thinks if he goes to war,it will prove his man hood. He tells Maria about his odeal as they are about to get married & she doesn't take it very well

7Q So your not only a Director your an Actor too,What made you want to become a motion picture actor?
A. That wasn't planned, actually what happened was a guy who was meant for the part in "The Last Kiss" turned it down,so I was the only one who could fill in during that small space of time because I understood the character better & I also co-wrote the script.

8Q. Tell us a bit about your childhood
A. School wasn't my favorite, you could teach me anything through TV & I would narrate to impress. I used to think the TV & film industry was for white people only,no one in my family could tell me anything about film,so there was no one to guide me. The best thing my mother could do was to make sure I was in school. Till I saw headlines about an African American director named Spike Lee. I watched his movies & his movies & stories are very rich because he always made movies based on the African American movement. I then bought my first video camera & started shooting clips wherever I went & even attended workshops & took internships in film production

9Q. What don’t people know about Thabiso?
A. Thabiso is a loving father to a very beautiful boy named JJ,I also run a production company called Robot War Studios & a school initiative called FreeSA School Of Film were we invite the grade 8 & 9 students to production sets & teach them the basics of making a movie or a tv series.

10Q. What do you love the most about what you do?
A.I look forward to the next day because very day is a different day, unlike a 9 to 5 job were you know what happens at exactly 11am on Thursdays.

RBM. Words of wisdom?
Thabiso. Push hard to get what you want & never give up.

Drift from education, let us face reality!

We sometimes do things without even thinking about the consequences, of course its life we do mistakes and learn from them; but some mistakes are done on purpose maybe because we want to test waters but we end up finding ourselves in difficult situation or rather we pretend not care about them. As an individual you got principals or morals excluding those that your parents taught you, but sometimes we set them aside because of circumstances that we find ourselves in. I believe in having a game plan in life, that won't make you regret or even have a guilty conscious at the end of day. A typical example can be being involved in the fight and then blame the alcohol, yet you are actually aware of what you doing and what is going on. What does it is say about you as an individual, your morals and your stands…it also goes to a point of RESPECT, respect starts from self-respect before it can fall to respect on a bigger scale. If you don't have self-respect the ability to respect others is more limited what you say to other people and how you treat them goes back 'how would you like to be treated'. You don't need to know someone in order to respect them but common courtesy and your morality that will set you right. Change your mind set, think before you act, it is better to analysis the situation before you become a victim or hurt someone in the process. We only have one chance to live, but many chances to make mistakes and a room for learning and making the situation different from what it can actually be. Live with no regret, but live with joy and make a difference….

Thasman - Maftown heights update!

Who is Thasman?

Thabiso "Thaso" Tsotetsi started making music in his flat in the early 90s has grown to become one of the most respected and talented producers in the South African music landscape.

After teaching himself the ins and outs of music production, Thaso moved to Cape Town and was offered a job at Mother Mix Record Label as an assistant producer. He later moved back to Mabatho where he composed more music and was later spotted by Beat Makers in Johannesburg.

It all started to look bright in 2000 when he joined Ghetto Ruff and started working with the likes of Metswako and Morafe, in which TowdeeMac (Morafe) gained his production skills under Thaso's wing. He relocated to Johannesburg with the music he had been producing and through those projects he got to produce the Gaz'lam soundtrack and jot music for prominent Kwaito star, Zola - Bhambatha which was released in 2004 and won Artist of The Year award at the 2005 South African Music Awards (SAMAs).

What does Maftown Heights mean to you?

Maftown Heights creates opportunities for us the elite in the Motswako movement and for the up and coming Motswako pioneers to share the same stage while fulfilling what we always dreamt about which is making vernacular rap commercially viable, pre dominantly Tswana Rap.

"Motswako" Maftown Heights is an event and or a platform that not only embraces Motswako and the artists behind it, but gives the public an experience they've always asked for which is to have most of their favorite Motswako artists under 1 roof, having their best music playing all night long and performed.

What don't people know about Thasman?

I'm a biker and a bit of an adrenaline junky. Something that takes me away from my music. Silence is mostly bliss in my space, I like my quiet space. I have a love for film so I spend my free time on shooting and editing film or videos.

That Maftown heights Update - KT!

Who is KT?

Having been raised in a very musical family, KT's talent was noticeable from an early age given his ability to catch on to songs and rap them fluently at 5 years old. It was this that earned him a regular spot in local talent shows.

During high school, KT came together with a friend who had a studio and began recording songs that created a buzz in and around Mmabatho. So much so that it earned him a feature on Morafe's second album called A e ne: the revelation; and a track called "Ayeye" from JR's debut album, The main event. In the same year, he recorded "Mogote" for DJ Lemonka's Hype Award winning The Motswako Tape vol.1.

Soon after finishing high school he began working on his solo project "After School" and has been living up to his name as Kgosi ya di Punchilne, featuring on DJ Lemonka's second offerring, The Motswako Tape vol.2; his clever metaphors, punch-lines and poise on stage earning him a spot on the HYPE Magazine's Top5 Unsigned emcees list.

What does Maftown Heights mean to you?

I've been attending Maftown Heights since its inception. At first it struck me as bizarre that Maftown Heights was held in JHB but I've come to understand the vision and above everything respect what the brand has done to break bread with/unify/bring together the various hip hop fraternities from across SA. Maftown Heights is undoubtedly the hottest hip hop event of the year.

What don't people know about KT?

One of the names I go by is profresherKT. Being FRESH is my profession. You might see me with the freshest sneakers, freshest woman & my rhymes "Are more like Debonairs pizza / they free(style) if u don't get em di fisa / & I don't come cheap / that's why I make sure I deliver hot fresh  prepared rhymes & make u pay a fee"

Fashion Quickies for Thick and Curvy Girls

Curvy girls or Thick girls. However you refer to your body type, curvy girls are the most envied girls for their beautiful curves. The curvy figure is one of femininity, womanhood and of absolute beauty- a physique that should be celebrated. As they all say, “Real women have curves”. So let’s celebrate these blessings the right way as we break-down simple rules for thick girls to follow to be Bee-U-TeeFully Stylish this Summer.

1    Shorts, Shorts and more Shorts!!!

Despite the rather offish weather, it is Spring and time for some skin to be shown. If you’re not comfortable with wearing shorts and have “flabby” thighs, then don't despair. Go for shorts that are longer cut and that sit above or below the kneecap, you’ll still make your legs look longer. Girls who are small on top and have wider hips (Pear-shaped) should opt for shorts in soft, floaty materials. This will flatter wider hips and is an instant chic look; just pair with a pretty blouse and you’re Good-to-go!

2.  Patterns, Stripes and everything in between.
Patterns are so in this season, but caution has to be taken when deciding how to wear them and what kind of patterns work for your body type. Avoid horizontal stripped, round shapes and tacky animal printed pants by all means! Stay far away from them. They will make your body seem wider. Trust me, these WILL expand and exaggerate your hips. Rather wear your prints and patterns on top in the form of a nice fitted blazer and keep the rest neutral and monotone or keep your prints monotonic in dress form

3.  (Maxi)mize your look.

The most effortless look creating waves worldwide is the Maxi skirt. The maxi empire disguises heavy-bottom (wide hips) figures by gently flaring wider towards the bottom. Also try high-low maxi skirts. Synch in a maxi skirt with a belt to create a small waist and pair with denim crop jacket. Simple, effortless and super cute! Love!

4.  Let’s get Chic!
For a more chic look, go for the skater skirt. The skater skirt plays on the idea of an A-line skirt, narrow on top and gently flaring wider toward the bottom. Pair this cute skirt with a plain white tee and a skinny belt with flat ballerina pumps. Make sure to keep it above the kneecap to avoid looking frumpy, while creating the illusion of longer legs

5.  Symmetries.

Stay away from shapes and cuts that will make you look stiff and robotic. Dresses and skirts that are most likely to add extra hips to the ones you already have will not be a good idea. Stick to cuts that are flattering, flowing and light for great comfort or rather go for a nice fitted dress that has sharp edges and cuts to it- to accentuate your features.

6.  Elongate yourself.

Wide feet should be counterbalanced by a wide heel. Thin heels draw attention to your wide feet. My suggestion? Every girl should own a beautiful pair of wedges! These add instant glamour to any casual look and obviously, elongate your body so you look taller without any uncomfy hassles. Great buy for this Spring/Summer! A good pair of shoes is the best investment you can ever make.

7.  If you’ve got it, Flaunt it.

Many thick and curvy girls are afraid to wear short, figure-hugging dresses. Don't be! You have got curves for days so why not show them off? It’s okay to wear tight bandage dresses that are well above the knee or figure-hugging pencil dresses for those rather special occasions. Just Remember to keep it simple, elegant and most of all, classy. Pair your dress with a nice, short, fitted blazer to flatter your waist and killer platform heels. Perfect!

8.  Oh Denim!

When it comes to the right denim for thick girls I would recommend you stick to bootlegs, wide legs and bell-bottoms. Because these represent an A-line cut, they will help balance out your body from your curvaceous hips to your feet. It is more than okay to wear skinny jeans- just make sure it is the right fit for you and high-waisted to synch in your waist. If there’s anything you should remember when wearing denim-on-denim, it should be this: Light on top, Dark on the bottom. Simple.

9.  Colour it right!
You’re curvy, not fat! Stop wearing black to look slimmer. Yes, it helps and does work on certain occasions but please, don't rule colour out of your wardrobe completely. It does take confidence to pull-off bright colours and get the colour-blocking trend correct without imitating a Christmas tree. If you’re a bit sceptical about colour, then I suggest you go for light, pale colours. Mint green is trending this summer, pale pinks, nude colours all add sophistication and femininity to your look. There is no need to be afraid of colour- be bright, beautiful and bold

10.Get Blousey.
Blouses can add ultimate femininity to any dull outfit. Go for light, sheer and flowy blouses, especially if you are gifted with bigger bust. Crisp white blouses are a must-have. They can be transformed from day to night. Pair your blouse with high-waisted dark denims/pencil skirt or cute skater skirts. Keep the feminine touch by adding nude platform heels and a classic red lip and my dear, you’re ready to take on the world.

With these simple and effortless tips to looking good this summer, I doubt you’ll go wrong. So, to all my thick girls, embrace your curves the best way possible- Love them. #TeamThick.

Dj Lestic SoulShaker and Terrence Mckay Interview

1Q. How did you guys meet?
A. We actually from the same hood in the Vaal and we've heard a lot about each other, so it happened that we always wanted to record something, then we finally hooked up and recorded "Broken Heart" that's where it all began. Will be putting Vaal on the Map

2Q. What is it that keeps you going as a Duo?
A. The fact that we make great music as a duo.

3Q. Aka or Pro?
A. Terrence- Aka is too much of a beast, his a problem though. So I'll go with Mr Makasan "Pro" (The number 1 Soweto boy)
A. Lestic- "Yebathi uthini ngo Pro" obvious, the number 1 Soweto boy

4Q. Terrence Mckay you are the vocalist behind the track 'Kings of tomorrow' by Dj Switch and you got to work with Hydro,Drew 985 and Kwesta, how was it?
A. Yes, I'm very proud to say I've worked with the big DOGS including Lulo Cafe as well (Check me out on his "Without you" track) It was really great, getting to work with artists who have made it in the industry and got to see the industry as they see it as well. That's great motivation to work even harder *pops collar*

5Q. So Dj Lestic, you opened for Zahara at the Orange Farm Festival, tell us about that
A. That's true, we opened up for Zahara after Black Coffee and Dr malinga *dusts dirt off shoulder* LOL! It was a great experience for me to actually play along side people whom I look up to. We even played along side artists like Zonke, Jaziel brothers, Bucie, Eddie Zondie, Donald etc and at the Vaal annual Beach party as well. Which was also a great experience for me.

6Q. You guys have an album out called 'Mixed Emotions' what inspired the title of the album?
A. Our album "Mixed Emotions" actually has different emotions, motivational, sad, happy, memorable and love songs which any1 can relate to. So thats how we came up with da name "Mixed Emotions"

7Q. How do you balance your music with other obligations?
A. We sacrifice a lot of things to ensure that music remains top priority

8Q. Which famous musicians do you admire and Why?
A. Terrence- Locally I'm gonna have to go with Black Coffee cause of his great music. Internationally its Anthony Hamilton and Chris Brown for the same reason as well
A. Lestic- Swedish House Mafia and Black Coffee. They inspire me, they believe in their craft so much, they keep it going and they just never give up.

9Q. If you guys had the opportunity to change something about the music industry what would it be?
A. The monopoly of power within the industry. Most artists are sounding the same, that's just lack of originality. If every one can stand out and be different the music industry would grow effortlessly

A. We always out there doing all kinds of bad things LOL. We just hang out with friends and hit the clubs just to let loose.
